Declan

After the basketball game, I head over to Brooklyn to stop by the shelter. I’m not technically scheduled to work today but I often do extra volunteer hours, mainly walking the dogs and helping with their training. But before you get all gushy—it’s not entirely altruistic. Volunteering at an animal rescue will look great on my job applications once I’m done with vet school.

“Urgh, you’re all gross and sweaty,” Lana comments, screwing her face up as I walk past her.

I give a lazy shrug. “Didn’t see the point in going home and showering when I’m just going to get all sweaty again.” I make my way over to the dog cages and have a look inside. “How’s Bucky doing? Think he’s up for a run today?”

I’ve been monitoring his recovery over the past week and he’s been doing better and better every day, as have the other dogs. Fortunately, whatever bug they had didn’t spread any further and we were able to open the shelter back up on Sunday.

“I think so,” Lana says, glancing over to where the giant black furball is sitting up in his cage with his tongue lolling out. “Just maybe go easy—keep it short?”

“That I can do.”

I take Bucky on a half hour circuit of some of the surrounding streets and a small park nearby. It’s probably just as well he needs to take it easy, because after this morning’s basketball game I’m still feeling a little worse for wear.

After I finish up the shelter, I head back to my apartment for an overdue shower. As I’m on the subway, my cell pings with a text from Heath.

Heath Caplin: Did you know I’m supposedly Rice, Rice, Baby’s manager??

I let out a bark of laughter when I read the text. Looks like the cat’s finally out of the bag.

Me: yeah babe, everyone knows that

Heath Caplin: I didn’t!

Me: Don’t freak out about this. You love your job. You’re great at it.

Heath Caplin: Not freaking out. Just a bit weird is all.

Me: Weird you didn’t realize sooner, for sure *laughing emoji* what you up to now?

Heath Caplin: visiting Grandpa, you?

Me: just spent some time with a gorgeous guy who has a thing for licking my face

Heath Caplin: you’re talking about a dog, aren’t you?

I decide to send him a picture of Bucky and me at the park.

Me: [Photo]

Heath Caplin: that’s the shitty dog *poop emoji* *vomit emoji*

Me: he’s back fighting fit now *smile emoji*

An Instagram alert pings on my phone and I check it to see Heath has posted the picture I just sent him and tagged me in the post.

My competition! If @deckells ever leaves me it’ll be for this handsome devil. Someone needs to remove the risk and adopt from @BrooklynAnimalRescue #dogstagram #adoptdontshop #brooklyn #adoptadog #petrescue #lookatthatface #dogsofinstagram

A rush of warmth floods me when I see the post encouraging people to adopt. I have no idea whether it will work or not, but it’s the thought that counts.

Heath Caplin: come over tonight?

I try not to read too much into that.
